Gallatin’s girls golf team opened the 2002 season with a victory
Gallatin’s girls golf team opened the 2002 season with a victory last Wednesday in a tri-meet held in Stanberry. The Lady Bulldogs combined for a team score of 214 to easily defeat conference rivals Stanberry (251) and Albany (306).
GHS senior Jamie Lunsford carded a 46 to win the medalist award. Stanberry’s Jill Widerholt shot 53 to finish a distant second. Other GHS individual scores included: Emily Gay 55, Whitney Boyd 56, Taylor Henderson 57 and Melanie Jones 59.
“I was pleased with our scores overall in our first meet,” GHS girls golf coach Chris Elbert commented. “Jamie was the only girl who had ever played the course. Emily, Whitney and Taylor all performed well in their first varsity action,” he added.
Gallatin junior varsity golfers also competed at Stanberry. Kathy Walker led jayvee efforts with a 69, followed by Alecia McKee 70, Becky Macy 71 and Keira Story 79.
Gallatin followed up last week’s success with a 206 to 243 victory over Lawson on Tuesday. Lunsford and Jones finished 1-2 in the medalist race with respective scores of 43 and 53. Gay and Henderson shot identical rounds of 55, which also beat a Lady Cardinal golfer. Boyd carded a 61 for Gallatin.
GHS junior varsity scores on Tuesday included: Macy 55, McKee 55, Walker 67 and Story 68.
“Our scores were pretty good on a course that we haven’t always scored well on in the past as a team,” Coach Elbert said. “Several girls have been striking the ball better in practice and carried that over into this meet,” he added.
The Lady Bulldogs travel to Maysville Thursday and head to Hamilton next Monday before returning for their first home meet Sept. 12 against Lawson.
