Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs squeezed out a one-run victory in the final at-bat

For the second year in a row, Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs squeezed out a one-run victory in the final at-bat of their season opener. Gallatin rallied for one run in the 6th inning and added the game- winner with 2 outs in the 7th to down Milan, 4-3, in front of a large opening-day crowd of supporters.
Katie Ward delivered the big blow with a fly ball to right field. Kellie Healy, a late-inning injury substitution for the Lady Wildcats, appeared to track the ball right into her glove, but it bounced out of the pocket as Ward trotted into second base. Brook Carter, who reached first on a throwing error and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches, came home with the winning run.
The Lady Bulldogs led, 1-0, in the 2nd inning after Kayli Burrell tripled to drive in Roxi Davitt, who led off with a single. Milan tied the game in the 4th with a single and fielder’s choice. Gallatin regained the lead when Burrell tripled again with 2 outs to bring home Lindsey Love following her base hit.
Milan scored twice in the 5th to take a 3-2 lead but Gallatin fought back to tie the game in the 6th on another Davitt single and Kayli Burrell triple. Lindsey Robertson, who threw a complete game for the Lady Bulldogs, choked Milan over the final two stanzas to earn her first victory of the season. She struck out 3 batters and scattered 8 walks over 7 innings. As a tribute to Gallatin’s defense, only one Lady Wildcat who reached base with a free pass managed to score.
“I was very pleased with our first effort,” GHS coach Christy Prather commented. “This gives us something to build on. We did some very good things out there,” she added.
Defensive highlights included Parker’s pick off of 2 baserunners. Cori Nichols fielded an attempted sacrifice bunt in the 2nd inning and threw out the batter while Davitt zipped the ball to third and nailed a runner trying to grab an extra base. Kayli Burrell snagged an inning-ending fly ball in the 3rd with the bases full.
The 1-0 Lady Bulldogs travel to Smithville Thursday for non- conference action beginning at 4:30.
