Jack Huff, son of J.W. and Martha Huff of Pattonsburg, recently received the “Environmental Stewardship Award” from Martin Marietta Materials.

Jack is an off road heavy truck driver for Red Hill Quarry of Charlottesville, Va., mid-east division. Jack started with the company in 1984 and has not missed a day of work due to illness and has not been involved in a single accident or incident at the Red Hill Quarry, according to Plant Manager W. Chance Allen who nominated him for the award.

In 1989, Jack requested the job of maintaining the front entrance, which meant mowing, planting seed and fertilizing once a year. But Jack didn’t stop there. He developed the entire south entrance of the quarry and corrected severe erosion problems. Then he began cleaning other areas including the dam area. He made a picnic area and developed the pond area. The company now has its safety cookouts at the pond area and holds special events there.

Jack later single handedly cleared both a stone cemetery and a monument area located on the quarry property. In addition, he developed a landscape theme for a new sign area off of 29 south.

Jack spends most weekends at the site either mowing, weed eating, spraying for weeds, or maintaining the new sign and the entrance. His efforts have clearly improved the look and feel of the quarry site. The local community supports the work Jack does and the quarry has received many calls and comments about how well kept and inviting the quarry looks.
