The Missouri Lions kick off their 26th Annual East vs. West All-Star Football Game at 6:30 p.m. on July 27 in Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium. Joining the West squad at fullback is 2002 Gallatin R-5 graduate Robert Heldenbrand.

Heldenbrand, senior class president and a senior captain for the 2001 Bulldogs, was all-Grand River Conference, All-Northwest District and 1A All-State last season. He was also named to the KAAN

and St. Joseph News-Press all-star teams. He will attend Graceland University this fall and participate in football for the yellowjackets, members of the Heart of America Athletic Association.

The Lions All-Star Game, hosted each year by the Lions Clubs of Missouri, features top football players from across the state. Each team is made up of about 30 players, bringing the total participation since the 1977 kick off game to more than 2,000 young athletes.

Total proceeds from the event benefit programs of Columbia’s Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation (MLERF). Foundation programs include Heartland Lions Eye Bank, glaucoma detection, amblyopia prevention, eyeglass recycling and eye care assistance. Players and coaches are invited to attend a session about MLERF, presented by foundation directors and staff members, a week before the game. The presentation provides participants with an opportunity to gain a better

understanding of the cause their participation supports.

Coaches and their players will be recognized at a banquet Friday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ramada Inn in Jefferson City. A special presentation will be made by a corneal transplant recipient.
