WINSTON, MO.–Three current point leaders used the advantage of starting on the pole and rode to victory in the 2002 Davis Whole Floor Covering Mid-Season Championship feature show at the Winston Speedway, 10 miles north of Cameron off I-35.

The second largest crowd of the season saw Dean Wray of Trenton win his 10th feature show of the season–the most of any driver at Winston–Mike Ryun of Kansas City take his eighth feature in the super stock class and Steve Klinger of Browning reign as the B modified champ. All three currently lead their divisions in the point chase. It was KlingerÆs fourth feature win.

Mark Wirth of Chariton, Iowa had to qualify through a heat and started back on the fifth row, but it didnÆt keep him from working his way to the front and winning his second feature of the season in the factory stocks. Kevin Burns of Kansas City ran from a front row outside start and led all the way in capturing his second feature of the season in the charger division.

The top six drivers in the points in each class got an automatic straight up start in the features while others in the points seven through 12 started straight up in qualifying heats with the remainder of the field of 80 cars at the rear of the qualifying heats.

The entire show concluded by 10:25 in what was perhaps the most exciting features of the season.

Wray got only one challenge halfway through the WoodyÆs Dodge Jeep Chrysler A modified feature when BrookfieldÆs Dale Marriott of Brookfield dipped down low and pulled beside Wray, who led all 20 laps. Wray pulled away and was lapping the field of 20 cars when the checkers came out.

Klinger had to work hard and dashed high at the last second to nip David Bouzek of Trenton to win the Davis Wholesale Floor Covering B modified feature. Klinger and Bouzek dueled for several laps before Bouzek went low and had a brief lead going into the final turn. Contact between the two cars as they crossed the finish line sent Bouzek off the track and into a retaining fence near the first turn. Nineteen cars started the feature.

Burns, last yearÆs point champ and second this season, got the pole start when point leader Jim Hopkins of Kansas City was 20 minutes late checking in and had to qualify through a heat race and then finished third behind Eddie Schwope, Jr., of St. Joseph and Burns. Burns spent the last six laps holding off Schwope.

Ryun, the point leader, led all 15 laps and dueled with Vic Austin of Kearney early. Ryun also was sixth in the A modified feature. Wirth came from a 10th spot and got the lead from Frank McCabe of Milan, the point leader. McCabe, winner of five features this season, was second.
