Jamie Lunsford, a senior at Gallatin R-5 High School, has been elected the 2002-2003 National Vice President of Membership of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Jamie is one of 10 national officers elected during the organizations 2002 National Leadership Meeting, held July 7-11 in Minneapolis, Minn. Election as a national officer is the highest leadership honor an FCCLA member can achieve.

Jamie’s election took place during a five-day leadership event centered around the student-developed theme, “Get Informed, Get Involved, and Get Connected.” This theme encouraged members to “Get Involved” in building a successful future by exploring career options, addressing their community needs, and focusing on family relations.

Gallatin FCCLA advisor Kathy Robertson has become a National Executive Council Advisor (NECA) for FCCLA. Kathy is one of 10 National Executive Council Advisers who sill support a national officer. During the 2002-2003 school year, she will be the national adviser to Jamie.

The NECA will help their officers guide FCCLA members, which consists of young men and women enroled in family and consumer sciences programs. Mrs. Robertson will represent the organization at national and state conferences and other public events. During the fall, she will attend workshops at Cluster Meetings, a series of four nationally sponsored, regional leadership training sessions.

Other meeting highlights included STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) which are competitive events that build proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills.

Meeting focus is “Get Involved”

Gallatin FCCLA members were among more than 4,700 advisers, alumni, and guests from across the country gathered in Minneapolis, Minn. for the 2002 FCCLA National Leadership Meeting.

During the meeting, participants examined many of the issues and challenges facing youth of the 21st Century and work toward gaining the “life skills” they need to meet those challenges.

FCCLA members attending the meeting were encouraged to pursue career goals, develop leadership abilities, strengthen family ties, and increase community involvement. A number of relevant youth issues — teen violence prevention, family relations, traffic safety, future careers, community service, and the changing roles of men and women in the home and workplace were explored at the meeting through presentations, hands-on workshops and panel discussions.

In addition to the election of the National Executive Council and STAR Events, highlights of the meeting included Spotlight on Projects and National Program Showcase, where representatives from states share successful national, state or chapter programs/projects.

Throughout the year, FCCLA members tackle issues such as environmental awareness, family relations, community traffic safety, substance abuse, and much more. FCCLA programs enrich student learning, improve self-esteem, and serve students with a range of ability levels, economic situations, and cultural influences.
