Funeral services for Alton Johnson were held Sunday at the Park Lawn Northland Chapel, Liberty. Burial was in Olsburg, Kans. Arrangements were by the McWilliams Family Funeral Home in Gallatin. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the VFW National Home or The American Heart Association.

Alton M. (Charlie) Johnson, 82, North Kansas City, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at his farm near Gallatin.

Mr. Johnson was born May 16, 1920 in Garrison, Kan.

Mr. Johnson was a World War II veteran serving in the marine corps 1941 until 1945.

Mr. Johnson was a truck driver for Farmland Industries for 32 years, retiring in 1983. While working with Farmland he rode their stagecoach in a reenactment of the Pony Express going across the western United States and in President Carter’s 1977 inaugural parade.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Blue Springs Masonic Lodge No. 337 AF&AM, and the VFW.

He married June Gwin in Kansas City, Kan. on May 1, 1946.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Mark, in 1984, and a daughter, Mona, in 1969; and three brothers, Arthur, Alceide, and Dale Johnson.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, June Johnson, North Kansas City; two daughters, Marianne Herrington, Kansas City, and Marla Taylor, Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Marvin Johnson, Kansas City; one sister, Ruth Pickett, Olsburg, Kan.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
