Intelligence sources tell us our old nemesis, Saddam Hussein, is at it again – forcing scientists and military to create and store weapons of a biological nature. These weapons are widely scattered and dispersed in everything from underground bunkers, to the basements of his 124 palaces. The shame is when we had Saddam on the run during the Gulf War, we should have finished the job.
These are not weapons that necessarily take years to perfect. They are nasty relatively little things, biological terrors that can fit into small spaces and carry hordes of germs. Hussein has shown he will not hesitate, once he has assurance that the means of dispersing them from his country to another (enemy) country can be accomplished with complete safety. He is as close to a mad-man as we have on this planet.
Unfortunately, many citizens of the United States haven’t appeared concerned with his threats. It wasn’t too long ago many Americans considered the oceans that lie on either side of our country offered lasting protection. Oceans are no longer protectors, but far too many still place priorities on watching ignoramus television entertainment or sports where over-sized Homosapiens get paid millions for playing children’s games. They tend to ignore unpleasantness..
This is too bad. Biological weapons are far more dangerous than a few cockroaches in the kitchen of your favorite restaurant. As individuals we can’t do much, but we must pay attention to possible peril. Scientists report that 220 pounds of anthrax released from slow-moving aircraft could kill three million people. Ponder that figure for a moment. In less than one hour, casualties could equal that of a three-year ground war.
With such developments looming on the horizon it is only proper that the U.S. and its allies ( and we’re not real sure today who they are with a few exceptions) to take this threat seriously. No more playing games with Hussein, no more sweet talk about compromise, no more wondering about how much inspectors might or might not see. What Hussein is hiding is far too deadly.
Our president took us into war during a fit of Texas-style anger after the September 11 attack He further complicated the situation by telling Saddam he was going to destroy his playhouse. We are in Afghanistan half-heartedly in one of the weakest displays of warfare most of us have ever witnessed. The Arab world sees this as a great opportunity to avenge their anger on a nation who to them appears un-Godly and arrogant. They have been waiting a long time to put America in its place.
I know that the loss of life September 11 was terrible. I don’t blame the White House for its happening. I only wish the president didn’t make judgements like a pistol-packin’ cowboy whose been isolated in the sagebrush too long. It appears we may start a war to avenge the unfortunate deaths of 3,000 people, plus possibly endure more attacks at home. Will the killing of another million or two human beings in a big war guarantee a peaceful future?
