Local businesses should be aware of a scam
Local businesses which often cash payroll checks during the course of normal transactions should be aware of a scam which was successfully pulled off in two instances this week in Gallatin.
Daviess County Sheriff Kevin Heldenbrand explains that at first glance the bogus checks appear legitimate. But in both instances, the checks were written from a non-existent business with a Trenton address. Closer scrutiny also reveals that the bank name printed on the check does not have an address. Other printing on the bogus checks, such as a social security number for the “employee” and a business routing number, are also fake.
Clerks and cashiers at local businesses should be aware that scams can, and do, occur. Please report any incidents to local authorities to assist in the investigations now underway.
