Senior Justin Kerns broke a 29-year-old Bulldog field event record and sophomore Keira Story won 5 of her 6 hurdle races to highlight a week full of track and field competition for Gallatin varsity track athletes. Gallatin’s girls walked away with the team title in last Tuesday’s Tiger (Worth County) Relays held at Graceland University in Lamoni, Ia. Bulldog teams also gave good showings Thursday at the Hamilton Relays, despite the absence of some team members attending the FFA state judging contests, and were among the top five schools at Saturday’s Quad State Relays in Maryville.

Kerns shattered the GHS discus record held for nearly 30 years by former multi-sport standout Keith Morrissey. Kerns’s toss of 159’10” was 16 feet better than the runnerup at Lamoni and relegated Morrissey’s 1973 throw of 150’11” to runnerup status in the Bulldog record book. Kerns also won the event at Hamilton (137’7″) and placed 2nd in Maryville (136’8″).

Keira Story capped a gold medal week of hurdles competition by turning in her best times of the season Saturday in Maryville. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.69 and took the 300-meter hurdles in 50.32, beating conference rival Julie McQuinn of Stanberry in both cases. Story was a double winner in Lamoni and won the 100- meter hurdle race at Hamilton when Maysville’s Brooke Pearl fell trying to clear one of her last hurdles. Story ran a close 2nd to Eulinger in the 300-meter hurdles, losing by only four-tenths of a second.

Sophomore and GHS record-holding pole vaulter Katie Ward won twice last week, clearing the bar at 7’10” at Lamoni and 8′ with the fewest misses at Quad State. Cori Nichols cleared 6’6″ for 4th place at Lamoni and also topped 8′ to take 4th at Maryville.

Junior Roxi Davitt’s best performances of the week came as she won the 3200-meter run at Lamoni (14:05.37) and Maryville (13:30.12), and took the 1600-meter race at Lamoni (6:12.23).

Senior Robert Heldenbrand won 3 shot put events over the past week — at Lamoni (45’4.5″), Hamilton (44’11”) and Maryvile (45’10”). He also won the high jump at Lamoni (6’1″), finished 2nd at Hamilton (5’10”) and 3rd at Maryville (5’6″).
