Gallatin R-5 High School FFA Chapter placed 28th out of 287 schools in the state to earn a Top Chapter Activity Award at the 74th Missouri State FFA Convention in Columbia, April 18 .
Sponsored by Farm Credit Services, chapter activity awards are given to FFA chapters achieving excellence in student, chapter, and community development. FFA marketing team members are Erin Croy, Kim Clevenger, McKenzie Riley, Amanda Bohannon.
Some student development activities include an Agriculture Sales Team that participated in the Missouri Governor’s Conference, Lake Viking Kid’s Kamp for slightly impaired children, and implementing a chapter scholarship for $1,000. Gallatin FFA Chapter also worked with five other chapters to hold three career development events in the areas of dairy judging, entomology and swine judging.
For the community, Gallatin FFA chapter hosted a National Hereford Hog Show in Cameron. This activity required members to set up the barn and sale, spread the bedding and prepare food for visitors from 10 states.
Gallatin FFA chapter also picked up trash and maintained a flowerbed at the entrance of Gallatin through the Adopt-A-Highway program. In addition, chapter members donated toys and food to the needy during the winter holiday season. Gallatin FFA chapter also presented fruits and dinner to the residents of Gallatin Senior Center.
The top chapters are submitted to the National FFA Organization where they compete for the National Chapter Award. The national competition will be held next fall at the National Convention in Louisville, Ken.

The Missouri FFA Association selected Austin Eugene Story III, as the second-place state winner in Small Animal Production and Care Placement. His parents are Eugene and Mary Jane Story.
Wilson Robb Tolen was selected as the second place state winner in Turf Grass Management Placement. His parents are David and Misse Tolen.
J.R. Chadwick, Jameson, was selected as second-place state winner in Diversified Crop Production Placement. His parents are Randy and Kathy Chadwick.
Jo Ann Tummons was selected Area 2 Star Farmer. She was also selected as the second place state winner in Beef Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award. Her parents are Brad and Julie Tummons.
Gallatin, Jamesport and Pattonsburg were among 36 schools received Building Our American Communities (BOAC) grants.
