On March 21 Gallatin’s V.F.W. Post #2172 and their Ladies Auxiliary met at the Lion’s Club Community Building to host the annual awards banquet to honor the three winners of the “Voice of Democracy” audio essay contest, the winner of the “Junior Essay” contest, their parents, participating teachers and the contest judges.
After the catered dinner, Darlene Patton, chairman, told about the history of the audio essay contest for high school students. Theresa Ford of Winston R-6 and Gregg Hartley of North Daviess R-3 were presented certificates of recognition for their participation.
Mrs. Patton also presented certificates of recognition to this year’s judges: Daren Adkins, Judy Carder, Vicki Corwin and Maxine Van Dyke. Cody Bird was also a judge, but was unable to attend the banquet.
The entertainment for the evening was the students sharing their winning essays based on the theme of “Reaching Out to America’s Future.” From the 16 submitted essays, James Hunt, North Daviess R-3, received third place; Brandi Goll, Winston R-6, was judged second place; and Krissy Neth of Winston R-6 was selected the first place winner. Brandi Goll was unable to attend the banquet. Mrs. Ford read her essay.
This was the first year for Gallatin’s V.F.W. to participate in the Junior Essay contest for junior high school students. There were three entries, with a separate panel of judges, using the “blind system” for selection of one winner. Katie Patton, Gallatin R-5, was announced the winner of Post #2172. She also won first place for District #1.
