Ben Weldon, son of Dave and Nancy Weldon, and Linda Denton, 4-H Youth Specialist from Daviess County, joined teens and chaperones from Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas to attend corporate tours, service learning projects, and workshops at the eighth annual Kansas City Global Conference held March 13-17. More than 400 4-Hers attended.
The sessions were designed to help delegates identify emerging work-force needs, gain insight concerning the global work place and provide interaction with diverse ethnic groups.
More than 40 workshops covered topics ranging from nuclear pharmacy, environmental issues, and international careers to food research and development. Instructors included not only extension staff, but also Kansas City area professionals who presented in their field of expertise.
Tours to Kansas City companies were offered for delegates to witness firsthand the changing work force need. The three-hour tours gave teens a chance to explore career opportunities in global society. Tour sites included Farmland Industries, Harley Davidson, Baptist Hospital, and General Motors.
Service learning, another component of the conference, helped delegates recognize service opportunities in their local communities, as well as giving to Kansas City. Delegates worked at sites including Harvesters Food Bank, Union Mission, Community Blood Center and Restore.
An ethnic enrichment event hosted booths with traditional food, music, dances, crafts, and exhibits from more than 20 countries. In partnership with the Kansas City Ethnic Enrichment Commission, the night provided an evening of ethnic dining, entertainment and shopping from the displays of Scotland, Brazil, Samoa, Nigeria, Israel, and India.
