A chain reaction accident last Friday afternoon involving 14 vehicles on southbound I-35, four miles north of Cameron in Daviess County, resulted in nine persons injured, including two children who were Lifeflighted from the scene.

According to a report by the Missouri Highway Patrol a large grass fire on the west side of I-35 resulted in smoke totally obscuring vision along a quarter mile stretch of the roadway. A chain reaction crash resulted as some vehicles slowed for the smoke, some stopped, and others continued into the smoke without stopping.

The highway patrol has determined that the grass fire was started by a muffler which had apparently fallen from a passing vehicle on Hwy. 69. The fire spread east from Hwy 69 to I-35.

Southbound I-35 was blocked for three hours. Northbound I-35 was closed for forty-five minutes while EMS cared for the injured.

Nashay Naeve, 17, received serious injuries and was taken by Lifenet Helicopter Ambulance to Liberty Hospital. Brennon Naeve, 13, was taken by Lifeflight Ambulance to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. The children’s father, Brent Naeve, 43, Humboldt, Iowa, received minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to Liberty Hospital.

Mr. Naeve was driving a 1995 Dodge Caravan which was totaled in the accident. Mr. Naeve was wearing a seat belt, the children were not.

Mary Lent, 41, Jamesport , received minor injuries in the accident. She was treated and released from Cameron Community Hospital. The 1985 Chevrolet pickup she was driving received extensive damage and was towed by Scotty’s tow service of Cameron. Mrs. Lent was wearing her seat belt.

Also receiving minor injuries were Walter Cummickel, 72, Cameron; Ann Cummickel, 73, Cameron, and Jill Saighman, 49, Blue Springs. Receiving moderate injuries were Jacqueline Ennis, 66, Kansas City and Carol Carver, 52, Braidwood, Ill. All of the injured were taken by ambulance to Cameron Community Hospital.

Arrests are pending while the investigation continues.

Other drivers involved in the accident were Walter Cummickel, 72, Cameron-1997 Buick Le Sabre-extensive damage; Jacqueline Ennis, 66, Kansas Citywas-1984 Chevrolet Cavalier-totaled; Joseph Nanasy, 35, Perry, Mich.-2002 Freightliner tractor-trailer, minor damage; Robert Frizzell, 77, Chariton, Iowa-1999 Cadillac-extensive damage; Phillip Wise, 48, Columbia-2001 Toyota Tundra pickup-extensive damage; Duane Morford, 57, Belton-2002 Chevrolet pickup-moderate damage; Wendy Hurley, 22, Des Moines-1997 Hyundai Tiburon-totaled; Carol Carver, 52, Braidwood, Ill.-2000 Hyundai Elantra-totaled; Harold Vandersee, 64, Oelwein, Iowa-1997 Dodge Intrepid-extensive damage; Ronald Vandekamp, 51, Knoxville, Iowa-2000 Mack tractor- trailer-minor damage; Ryan Schwartz, 24, Des Moines, Iowa-2001 Toyota Corolla-extensive damage; and Richard Bowlin, 57, Holt-2002 Ford F350 pickup-minor.
