On Sunday, Feb. 10, the First Christian Church celebrated a burning of the mortgage of Fellowship Hall. After morning worship and a potluck dinner, the congregation enjoyed a program that included music by the children’s choir, Julie Hefley, Barbara Wilson and the adult choir.

A review of the events leading to the completion of the new building was read by Sherri Kerns. A poem, “God Builds No Churches,” was read by Brook Carder. The Building Committee was on hand to participate in the burning of the mortgage.

Members included Lucille Bruce, Junior Stith, Arland Haynes, R.L. Trimm, Marilyn Ripple and Tammy Gay. Olive Howard, now deceased, and Angie Culver Cornelius, now living in Columbia, were also members, as was William Steward, present chairman of the general board.

Guests for the occasion included Roger Kiepe, director of development of the mid America region of the Christian Church, Jefferson City, the Rev. Donna Rose-Hein, co-minister of northwest area, her son Nate and her father, Mr. Hein, of Cameron.

Groundbreaking for Fellowship Hall was September 1995, and the building was completed by Trickle Construction in May 1996. The congregation, which paid off the building five years early, is grateful for the facility, which is used not only by the church, but also for community events.
