Some of the best known livestock experts in the Midwest will be speaking at the Harrison County Cattlemen’s College Feb. 15-16 at the Hickory Hill Arena, north of Bethany.
The two-day seminar will be presented by the Harrison County Cattlemen’s Association.
The session will feature several concurrent sessions allowing producers to hear about their favorite topics. The sessions will be repeated the second day, according to the cattlemen’s association.
David Patterson, state extension beef cattle specialist with the University of Missouri- Columbia, will demonstrate the use of ultrasound in pregnancy checking, pre-breeding exams and other procedures. He will also demonstrate the principles of sound heifer development, pre-breeding exams and pelvic measurement.
Other speakers include Gene Schmitz, regional livestock specialist with the University Outreach and Extension division, who will demonstrate body condition scoring; Rodney Roberts, who will discuss how his clients utilize different pasture management practices; Richard and Roy Moore who will talk about the benefits of timely pasture clipping, and Kevin Hansen, who will demonstrate the Quicken farm record keeping system.
The beef quality assurance trailer from the University of Missouri’s Institute for Beef Cattle also will be displayed at the seminar at Hickory Hill.
Bill Chandler, a grain market analyst and fed cattle analyst for northern Colorado and western Nebraska, will present a discussion about Cattle Fax, a member-owned information organization serving producers in all segments of the cattle business.
The Harrison County Cattlemen’s Association will be sponsoring a trade show featuring 18 vendors offering services to area cattlemen. Businesses represented include feed, machinery and seed stock producers.
The Hickory Hill Arena is located five miles north of Bethany on U.S. 69. Turn east on 280th Street to the arena.
The schedule for the two day event:
Friday, Feb. 15
1:30 p.m.—High school FFA workshop; ultrasound demonstration, and beef quality assurance trailer.
3 p.m.—Concurrent sessions: Beef quality assurance trailer; Quicken for farm record keeping; cattle demonstrations by Dr. David Patterson and Gene Schmitz, ultrasound, heifer development and body condition scoring.
4:30 p.m— Pasture management, Rodney Roberts and Richard and Roy Moore.
5:30-6:30 p.m.—Dinner break (on your own) and trade show.
6:30-8 p.m.—Cattle Fax, Bill Chandler.
Saturday, Feb. 16
9 a.m.—Cattle Fax.
10 a.m.—Pasture management.
Noon to 1:30 p.m.—Lunch break and trade show.
1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.—Concurrent sessions, beef quality assurance trailer; Quicken for farm record keeping, and cattle demonstrations.
