Charles Campbell, 33, Chula, was fatally injured in a three vehicle accident at about 2:20 a.m. this Wednesday morning, according to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at about 2:20 a.m. on I-35, 10 miles south of Bethany, as a Peterbilt tractor trailer driven by Michael F. Dueitt, 37, Yukon, Okla., lost control and rolled onto its driver’s side across both northbound lanes of I-35.

A pedestrian, Donald Cimfl, 58, Rice Lake, Wisc., attempted to assist Mr. Dueitt when a Kenworth tractor trailer driven by Karl McCormick, 29, Chariton, Iowa, struck the undercarriage of the Peterbilt. The pedestrian, Mr. Cimfl, was struck by unidentified debris during the impact.

A third vehicle, driven by Mr. Campbell, then struck the Peterbilt’s undercarriage and traveled off of the right side of the roadway and struck the Kenworth causing it to overturn. Mr. Campbell’s vehicle then spun around 180 degrees and overturned.

Mr. Campbell was pronounced dead by the Harrison County coroner. The body was taken to Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany.

Michael Dueitt received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics. Mr. Cimfl was taken by private vehicle to Cameron Community Hospital.

Both tractor trailers were loaded cattle haulers. The Kenworth broke open and released between 50 to 60 head of cattle. As of noon today I-35 remained closed with a detour marked as officers continued to round up cattle.

The accident was investigated by the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Harrison and Daviess County Sheriff’s Departments.
