Adult Education and Literacy staff across the state have received training recently to help people complete new GED paperwork and register for the test, said John Stains, AEL director at North
Central Missouri College in Trenton.
New paperwork includes a demographics form that is completed before registering to take the test, Stains said. Although GED classes are free, total cost for taking the test is $40. In order to
take the GED test, individuals need to complete the following:
1. Obtain a GED application from your local AEL site (Bethany, Brookfield, Chillicothe, Galt, Hamilton, Princeton, Trenton and
Unionville). Fill the form out completely and mail the application with a $20 money order to: GED Office, Dept. of Elementary & Secondary Education, PO Box 480, Jefferson City, MO
65102
2. After receiving a packet back from DESE, return to the local AEL site to fill out the pre-registration form, which includes the Demographics Form and the GED Testing Registration Form. The AEL teacher will assist students in filling out these forms, Stains said. The pre-registration packet should be sent to the address provided on the envelope, along with another $20 money order or cashier’s check for test registration.
3. After about one week, applicants planning to take the test in Trenton can call Maggie Coffin at (660) 359-3948, ext 201, to verify that she has received the packet and to schedule the test. The
GED test is administered monthly at NCMC.
“People are not required to attend the free AEL classes before taking the GED test. However, they are strongly encouraged to enroll in AEL classes to help familiarize them with the new GED test and prepare them to pass it.
Students who take the classes have a significantly higher pass rate,” said Stains. If they do not pass the test, there is a 60-day waiting period before they can reapply.
NCMC’s AEL program is supported by local, state and federal funds and currently operates in the Bethany, Brookfield, Chillicothe, Galt, Hamilton, Princeton, Trenton and Unionville areas.
