Funeral services for Ervin Sanders, brother of Eurma Sperry of Pattonsburg, were held Monday at Newcomers Noland Road Chapel in Independence. Interment was at Floral Hills East Cemetery.

Ervin Edgar Sanders, 73, Independence, died Jan. 2, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mr. Sanders was born in rural Marion County, Kan. He graduated in 1946 from Eureka High School in Eureka, Kan.

Mr. Sanders was a sergeant in the Army, HQ and HQ Company, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division from 1952-1955, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Following his military service, he enrolled in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was named a member of the Alpha Epsilon scholarly fraternity in 1961

and received a B.S. degree in agricultural engineering in 1963 from the university.

Mr. Sanders was a registered professional engineer. He worked as a civil engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation, Department of the Interior, from 1963-1966 in Idaho and Washington. He was a

hydraulic engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers in Kansas City, from 1966 until his retirement in 1988.

Mr. Sanders was a Christian. He was a member of Susquehanna Baptist Church, Independence, where he was a deacon, usher, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, and a member of numerous church committees. He served as a messenger to local and national Southern Baptist Convention meetings.

Mr. Sanders was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.

Other survivors include his wife of 44 years, Margaret Sanders of the home; one daughter, Brenda Sanders of Independence; two sons, Alan “Jim” and Linn of Blue Springs; two brothers, Lester of Independence and Wesley of Minnesota; one other sister, Frances Cox of Kennewick, Wash.; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
