North Daviess school administrators expressed serious concern about lack of sportsmanship of adult fans at district sponsored sporting events during the regular meeting of the R-3 Board of Education.
“We have some fans that are very critical of the referees and some of the players,” said Superintendent Julie Kirby. “We’d rather turn fan participation into a positive experience that encourages kids rather than humiliates them.”
A discussion was held about the district’s options to help eliminate the problem.
“We’ve had no fist fights or anything like that,” said Ms. Kirby. “We have people standing up and shouting things that could have been better placed. We don’t want it to escalate.”
During administrative reports, Mr. Willhite expressed his pleasure with the improvements in student performance and the attitude of the students towards school work.
The board went over details for the Renovation Grant and Long Range Facilities Plan. A motion to apply for the School Building Renovation Grant was accepted.
Minutes of the Dec. 4 special board meeting were amended to accept the contract with Shamrad’s of St. Joseph.
The financial statement was presented by Ms. Kirby. Bills were paid as presented.
The first board filing day is Dec. 18 and the last day to file is Jan. 15, 2002.
The social studies curriculum was accepted.
The Local Assessment Plan was adopted.
Ms. Kirby presented the Annual School Report Card and Annual Performance Report. The Report Card was mailed to each patron in the community.
Mrs. Steinman lead a discussion of results from last year’s MAP testing. Scores were compared by gender, IEP, and economic level.
Mrs. Steinman reported on the success of the Winter Music Program and Dinner. The kindergarten, first and second grades entertained the residents of the nursing home in Gallatin and later sang carols through the halls of the high school.
Ms. Kirby reported a decline of funding from the state of $90,000 less than last year.
After returning from executive session, the next regular meeting of the R-3 Board of Education was set for 6:30 Monday, Jan. 14, at Coffey.
Board members present at the Dec.17 regular meeting were David Iddings, Donald Baker, Bob Griffin, Debbie Ray and Rhonda Sweet. Beverly Hunter and Kelly Hightree were absent. Also present were Julie Kirby, Sheri Steinman, Todd Willhite and Bobbie Pyles. Board secretary Beverly Hunter was absent; Rhonda Sweet took notes.
