Gallatin R-5 Athletic Director Chris Elbert addressed a large crowd attending the fall athletic banquet Friday night by quoting a letter received from MSHSAA Assistant Executive Director George R. Blase. The letter forwarded a special complimentary report submitted by a MSHSAA registered official, which reads in part as follows:
“On Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, my crew and I had the pleasure of officiating the football game between Gallatin High School and Albany High School at Albany. The first half was the hardest hitting, cleanest, best sportsmanship game I think I can remember in my years officiating. The players were constantly helping each other up off the field and patting each other on the back. We had only one penalty the whole first half (delay of game). At halftime, I told the captains they should be proud of how they performed in the first half and to strive to do it the second half. They did get tired, so there were a few more penalties, but none that were of the ‘unsportsmanship’ variety. I can only remember one time that I had to say anything to a player for getting carried away because they were frustrated. Coaches, administrators, parents and the players as well should be proud to be associated with that game.”
Former GHS football lettermen were present to share in the festivities which marked the 10th season for Coach Kevin Hixson at GHS. These included Chris Belshe, Adam Rhoades, Chris Lasher, Michael Whitney, Ben Hubbard and Randy Eaton.
Footballs signed by GHS players were presented to Dr. Larry Dickinson and Dr. Stan Humphrey. Framed photographs from the Humphrey family were presented to senior football players. Coach Hixson indicated that Gatorade “Will To Win” certificates would be presented at a later date. Team captains Austin Story, Adam Whitney and Bob Heldenbrand presented a gift to Cecil and Helen Humphrey, towels to the coaches (for future victory splashes) and “inadvertent” whistles (in regards to the Rock Port and Bethany games).
Cheerleader sponsor Missy Chadwick noted the “Salute to America” pep rally was a season highlight for GHS cheerleaders. She also announced that cheerleaders plan to perform at the Show-Me Showdown state basketball championships at Columbia in March.
