The Partners in Policymaking program is a leadership/training program designed for self- advocates and parents of young children with developmental disabilities. The program consists of eight, two-day sessions that are held between February and September of 2002.
National speakers provide state-of-the-art information about best practices in disability-related areas such as independent living, quality education, family support, technological advances for persons with severe physical disabilities, whole-life planning and critical state and federal issues.
Based on a national model, the Partners in Policymaking program helps develop relationships between people who need and use services and those in position to make policy and law.
In Missouri, there are an estimated 95,000 people with developmental disabilities. Nationwide, two out of every 100 persons have a developmental disability, a long-term condition that significantly delays or limits mental of physical development. Examples of these conditions include mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and learning disabilities.
