At the regular meeting of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education held Oct. 18, a motion carried to gather signatures for a petition drive to place an amendment on the ballot to change levy/bond elections to a simple majority.
The financial statement was reported by Pat Heaps. Bills were paid as presented.
Some members of the senior class requested to move the date of graduation. After discussion, the date of graduation was kept at 3 p.m. on May 12, 2002.
Scott Stephens’, CPA, presented his auditor’s report which the board accepted as presented.
The following support salaries were set: field/game trips at $34 for half day and $68 for full day; bus mechanic at $8.38 per hour; and oil changes at $19.65 each.
The board discussed the options of a fire escape verses attaching to the rural water district and installing a sprinkler system.
Jameson Community Betterment Club hosted “Make a Difference Day” at the high school on Oct. 27. Volunteers were encouraged to help with repairs and clean-up activities around the school. Ms. Kirby will be the school representative on the Jameson Community Betterment Advisory Board.
A board/staff dinner is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Nov. 4 to celebrate the improved MAP test scores and new curriculums.
Mr. Ballard has applied for a grant to place drainage tile under the infield. The Soil and Water Conservation Office is providing technical specifications.
Ms. Pyles reported she won a $1,200 dollar grant for magazines for the elementary students to receive at home. While accepting the grant from the Rural Community Foundation, Ms. Pyles won a $500 door prize on behalf of the district. Discussion of the use of the additional money centered around terracing of the seating area along the first base line and building a pavilion for picnic tables.
A motion carried to apply for a grant from the Rural Community Foundation for improvements for the ball field.
Ms. Steinman reported that siding of the front gable is completed and the elementary school’s new swing set has been erected with volunteer help form Mike Youngs Backhoe, Henry Rhoades, and Marcie and Gilbert Ward. A handicapped parking pad has been poured with labor donated.
The board expressed its appreciation to Bill Lewis, Bill Lewis Jr., James Lewis, Trevor Hunter and Mike Youngs for donated labor and equipment use.
The elementary students attended a field trip to the Living History Celebration in Lathrop and the high scoring MAP students will attend World’s of Fun on Oct. 27, as a reward for their hard work. Mr. Willhite reported that high scoring high school students had attended Worlds of Fun on Oct. 13.
Mr. Willhite reported the will be on a MSIP committee evaluating the Mid-Buchanan school district on Oct. 30-31.
The board went into closed session.
Next regular meeting of the board was set for 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at in the High School conference room at Jameson.
Board members present at the regular meeting held Oct. 18 were David Iddings, Donald Baker, Debbie Ray, Bob Griffin and Beverly Hunter. Board members absent were Rhonda Sweet and Kelly Hightree. Also present were Superintendent Julie Kirby and board secretary Beverly Hunter, Todd Willhite, Pat Heaps and Sherie Steinman.
