Funeral services for James Sims were held Saturday at Baptist Church in Coffey. Burial was at Coffey Cemetery, with military rites by members of the American Legion Post No. 216 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2176, both of Bethany; and American Legion Post No. 106 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5329, both of Albany. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral chapel, P.O. Box 341, Bethany, 64424.

James Melvin Sims, 79, Coffey, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at the Liberty hospital.

Born in Blue Ridge, Mr. Sims was a graduate of the Coffey high school. He was a lifelong resident of the Coffey area.

Mr. Sims had been engaged in farming and owned various businesses over the years until retiring in 1980. He also had served as mayor of Coffey.

Mr. Sims served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of the Coffey Baptist Church; American Legion Post No. 257, Cainsville; Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former member of the Coffey School Board.

On June 13, 1942, he married Marian L. Bonnell in Chillicothe. She survives of the home.

Mr. Sims was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil, Dan and Jack; and three half brothers, Fred, Elmer and Raymond.

Additional survivors include two sons, Jim, Liberty, and Mike, Coffey; three daughters, Carol Clutter, Coffey, Linda Warner, Liberty, and Anita Whitmire, Liberty Center, Ohio; a brother, Kenneth, De Sota, Kan.; a half brother, Archie, Cave Junction, Ore.; two sisters, Alean Courter, Valley Falls, Kan., and Ruby Harris, Bethany; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
