Nathan Henderson, a physical therapy education major at Northwest Missouri State University, was presented with the Plowman Scholar crystal award on Sept. 29 in honor of his academic excellence and distinction as one of the newest Plowman Scholars. Nathan, a 2001 graduate of Gallatin R-5 High and son of Mike and Vicki Henderson of Gallatin, was thrilled to receive the James Plowman Scholarship.

“Jim’s obviously very gracious,” Nathan said. “He has given an opportunity to someone who would not normally have had it. I would like to sincerely thank him.”

Jim D. Plowman is a native of Gallatin and owner of Midwest Walnut Company in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He has provided special support for full-tuition scholarships at Northwest, which are renewable annually based on academic excellence. There are currently four Plowman Scholars attending Northwest.

A Plowman Scholar must be a graduate of GHS or South Harrison High School and must have superior academic merit, as well as school and community involvement. The full-tuition award is based on the recipient attending Northwest, maintaining a 3.5 GPA and receiving the recommendation of the selection committee. Nathan also plays Bearcat football at Northwest.

“Private scholarship programs that fully fund tuition are not very common at regional universities, so we are obviously delighted that this opportunity exists for Gallatin and Bethany students,” says Lance Burchett, Vice President of University Advancement. “We are very grateful for Mr. Plowman’s support, and so are the students. As the cost of college continues to increase, scholarships often dictate a student’s ability to attend the school of his or her choice.”
