The slumping Pattonsburg Panthers dropped 3 softball games last week as their record fell to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the HDC.
North Mercer handed the Panthers a 10-4 loss at home last Tuesday as the Cardinals scored in every inning but the 4th. Robert Woodring went 2 for 3 for the Panthers and Tyler Miller had one hit with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.
Pattonsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Cainsville last Thursday but the Redmen won the battle, 18-8. The Panthers threatened in nearly every inning, but failed to pick up the hits they needed.
“This was a tough loss for us tonight,” said Coach Kirk Sears. “We started well and appeared to have the momentum, but Cainsville showed why they are close to the top in the conference standings right now,” he added.
Chase Cornett went 2 for 3 and was the lone bright spot at the plate for the Panthers. Pattonsburg drew 11 walks but could not string enough run-producing hits together for a big inning.
The Panthers took on Jefferson last Friday when North Daviess could not field a team. Eleven PHS errors aided the Eagles as they took a 12-6 non-conference decision. Pattonsburg outhit Jefferson, 7 to 5, but once again failed to get crucial hits. Kirt Hangley had 3 hits and scored a pair of runs for the Panthers. Miller reached base twice and scored twice. Jeremy Humphrey added 2 hits in his varsity debut in centerfield.
Jefferson took the junior varsity boys contest, also, 11-8. Matt Shell took the loss. Tyler Miller, Drayson Leeper, Matt Shell, Jonathan Lowrey and Jeremy Humphrey each collected a hit in the game.
LADY PANTHERS 5-1 IN HDC
The Lady Panthers put themselves into the thick of the HDC race with two more victories last week over North Mercer and Cainsville. Now 6-6 overall, the Lady Panthers are 5-1 in conference play with three games remaining.
A 5-run 2nd inning helped Pattonsburg to a 6-1 win over Mercer last Tuesday. Two Lady Cardinal errors, a pair of fielder’s choices and a single by Jessica Hartley and bases-clearing double by Chelsey Lowrey were all that was needed. Mercer scored a lone run in the 5th inning but Pattonsburg added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when Ashley Brown reached base on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Nicole Woodward scattered 7 hits, struck out 8 and allowed 2 walks on the way to her 5th victory of the season.
The Lady Panthers blasted Cainsville, 10-0, Thursday night behind early scoring. Pattonsburg scored in every inning but the 4th and 5th. The Lady Panthers managed only 6 hits but drew 17 walks.
“I was pleased with our patience tonight,” PHS coach Kirk Sears said after the game. “We didn’t see many strikes and it could have been just as easy to not be patient and swing at poor pitches.”
Lowrey lead the way with a pair of hits and 4 runs scored. Nena Woodward contributed a hit and 2 stolen bases while scoring 3 runs. Nicole Woodward evened her record at 6-6 with her 12th complete game of the season. She gave up 2 hits while striking out 8.
Pattonsburg games were rained out Monday (Union Star) and Tuesday (Ridgeway).
