Panthers sweep Redbirds in HDC softball action

The Lady Panthers improved to 2-0 overall and in the HDC with a 17-4 victory over the Winston Lady Redbirds last Tuesday. Pattonsburg sent 15 batters to the plate in the 5th inning and tipped the scales with a 9-run outburst.

The Lady Panthers were led at the plate by the Woodward sisters. Nena went 3 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and Nicole was 2 for 2 with 3 stolen bases, an rbi and 3 runs scored. Bess Sweiger collected 3 hits, including a pair of triples, and scored 3 runs. Freshman Chelsey Lowrey drove in 3 runs with a single and sacrifice fly. Nicole Woodward struck out a season-high 7 batters and allowed only 2 hits in improving her record to 2-0.

Pattonsburg’s boys outlasted the Redbirds, 12-10, to improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Panthers scored 5 runs in the opening stanza and were up, 6-2, after 2 innings before a change of fortune. Winston, aided by a bases-loaded triple by Luke Caldwell, scored 8 runs to take a brief, 10-6, advantage in the top of the 4th. Pattonsburg came back with 6 runs in what turned out to be the final half inning of the game.

Drayson Leeper notched his first victory by recording 6 outs and allowing only one hit and one walk in relief of Chase Cornett. Tyler Miller had 3 hits and scored twice. Casey Anderson chalked up a pair of hits, 2 stolen bases and 3 rbi.

Caldwell drove in 4 runs total with a double and triple.
