During the Aug. 13 regular meeting of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education, Superintendent Julie Kirby reported that projected revenues will fall at least $80,000 below the previous year’s amount due to reduced aid coming from the state.

The tax rate hearing was held. The tax levy was set at $4.90 for the incidental fund and $0.55 for the capital projects fund for a total levy of $5.45 per $100 assessed evaluation. The following information was presented:

The board voted to proceed with a preliminary design for a fire escape for the high school designed by Ellison-Auxier Architects. Materials and detailed specifications will be submitted for final approval.

Bills were paid as presented.

Work is proceeding on the annual secretary of the board report which is now being submitted via the Internet. Copies will be presented for approval at the next regularly scheduled board meeting.

The Elementary Handbook, High School Handbook and Discipline Policy, and Employee Handbook were adopted.

The board received a brief tour of the high school and saw the many improvements made by Jim Cook and Henry Rhoades and their crew of work release inmates.

The ethics policy was adopted with a copy to be sent to the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Activity passes for the entire year will be offered to families, individuals and senior citizens at the same prices as last year.

The present building use policy was reviewed. The school will continue to permit non-profit organizations and community groups to use school facilities without charge provided they give a $25 deposit for damages. Individuals and businesses conducting sales would pay 25% of their profits to the school. If air conditioning is desired, there will be a charge of $15/date for the use of a classroom or lunchroom and $50/date charge for the gym.

Ms. Kirby reported on various grants totaling $78,037 that the district will be receiving during the school year. The school has set a goal to apply for one grant each month.

Ms. Steinman informed the board regarding the Rural Kids Reading Initiative which will involve all elementary teachers in training to teach reading skills more effectively.

Ms. Kirby requested approval from the board to remove the old tires from the playground area ad donate $50 to the City of Jameson for the use of their equipment. It was the consensus of the board to implement both suggestions.

The next regular meeting for the Board of Education was set for 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 10 in the high school conference room at Jameson.
