The American Cancer Society has selected Dana Urton, a native of Jamesport, and Administrator of the Daviess County Health Department, to serve as chairman for this year’s Daviess County Relay for Life. Dana would like to announce that the theme for this year’s event will be “We are Not Going to “SIT-COM” for a Cure.” Mark your calendar for Saturday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s national signature event and is as much an awareness raiser as a fund-raiser. This family oriented team event brings participants from all parts of the community together in a “celebration of life.”

Businesses, civic clubs, churches, friends, and family take turns walking and running in relay fashion while they also celebrate the critical role the American Cancer Society plays in the fight against cancer.

The vital research and programs of the American Cancer Society are leading the way to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. The more funds raised translates into more research and more lives saved.

The Daviess County Relay For Life committee includes: bankers-Marie Toney and Tricia Croarkin; mission smart-Learn and Do Club/Judy Ramsbottom; team recruiter-Sherri Carder; entertainment/baby and talent Show-Vera Dowell, Gayla Teel and David Burkeybile; food-Shona Morrison; advertising-Gallatin FCCLA Chapter; luminary sales-Cheryl Alexander; survivor registration-Sandy Evans; chili cook-off-Jamesport FCCLA/FFA; soup provided by the Boy Scouts to honor survivors; and Cub Scouts helping in other areas. Logistics has still not been filled.

Seven teams have already signed up to participate: Learn and Do Club; Daviess County Health Department; LDS Women’s Organization; The Human Resource Council; Jamesport FCCLA/FFA; Gallatin Social Service Club; and the Terry family.

More teams are needed. A team is eight to 12 people. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer. They will pick a TV sit-com to coordinate their camp site theme. For example the Health Department has chosen “Finding a Cure for ‘Happier Days’.”

The team members will take turns walking the track. They will participate in activities during the night. All team members receive a free Relay for Life T-shirt. It is a fun night for friends and families. Get a team together and have a night full of fun!

To register your teams, please contact Sherri Carder at 660-663-2414 or 663-3106. To inquire about luminary sales contact Cheryl Alexander at 660-684-6458 or 663-2414. To register survivors for the Survivor Walk and free T-shirt, contact Sandy Evans at 660-663-3247.

If you have any questions or need information about Relay for Life, Dana will be happy to help. You may reach her at 660-684-6423 or 663-2414. Next organizational meeting for committee heads and team leaders will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27 at the Gallatin Christian Church education building. Any volunteers that want to help in any way are welcome.
