The summer component of the Upward Bound program at North Central Missouri College concluded recently with a reward trip to Nashville and an awards banquet in Chillicothe.
Kendra Wolgast, UB director, said 36 of 38 students participated in the Nashville trip, which they earned through good attendance, participation and good conduct. Only two students were unable to attend due to other commitments.
After traveling to Nashville via motor coach, the group toured the Country Music Hall of Fame, Opryland Hotel, Vanderbilt University and the Belle Meade Plantation, among other sites.
At the awards banquet at Grand River Inn, 105 people attended and UB students were recognized for achievements. Casey Wallace of Penney High in Hamilton was voted Outstanding Student by the entire UB staff.
Bridge students (graduating seniors taking 3-6 hours of NCMC college classes during the summer) included Christina Cox and Cristal Talbott of Gallatin R-V, Mindy Wallace of Penney High and Dusty Wheeler of Grundy R-V. Two of them, Wallace and Wheeler, also received
$500 Bridge Scholarships.
All seven high school graduates are making plans for college this fall, “which is exactly what we hoped would happen,” said Wolgast. Other graduating seniors include: Melissa Bush, Chillicothe High School; Melissa Froelich, Gallatin R-V; and Jennifer Pendergast, Grundy R-V.

The program is funded through a $200,000+/year, four-year grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education. This past year, the NCMC UB program received a $10,000 technology supplement, which was used for laptop computers, scientific calculators, books and a color printer.
NCMC’s UB program serves high school students in six communities–Trenton, Galt, Chillicothe, Hamilton, Jamesport and Gallatin. In Missouri, there are 10 Upward Bound programs and 22 TRIO institutions.
