A chapter in Chillicothe history closed on June 22 when Harlow’s Dining and Lounge served patrons for the last time. After over 23 years of business, owners Clifford and Kathy Harlow decided it was time to make a change, just as area residents’ lifestyles and the restaurant market have changed.
The historical building which was housed Harlow’s, has been a fixture in downtown Chillicothe since the late 1800’s. First known as Bradley’ Saloon, over the years the building has housed Grant’s Hardware, Crane Auto Supply and Powell Café. Several barbershops have been located in the building. In the late 1930’s, Red Clarke’s Coffee Café was in business at this location followed by cafes owned by J.B. Atkisson and George Reger.
In 1979 Harlow’s was born. With a play on their name, Cliff and Kathy decorated the interior with Jean Harlow memorabilia. Soon the walls were covered with photos, sheet music and magazine articles relating to Harlow and other 1930’s movie stars. Their goal was to serve
Northwest Missouri with catering and banquet services along with fine dining. Over the years this service has reaped many awards including the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award and the Midwestern Food Expo.
When your evening at Harlow’s becomes a memory, may that memory become a treasure” is the logon on the restaurant’s menu. That message has taken on a new meaning for Cliff and Kathy since their closing. Every day patrons have called sharing memories of prom, a couple’s engagement, or an annual anniversary dinner. Along with these memories have come requests to purchase a favorite piece of Harlow decor. For this reason, The Harlows, decided to hold a tag
sale on July 20 and offer the contents of the restaurant to the public with the exception of restaurant equipment.
