Jesse James Days at Winston unfolds July 12-15 with a program that differs somewhat from previous years. A Thursday evening program has been added, with gospel music slated for 7 p.m. as those attending are invited to an ice cream social.
As in previous years, the Winston Post Office will offer a pictorial cancellation to commemorate the festival. Postmaster Steve Lee has announced the pictorial cancellation will be available in the Winston City Park from noon to 3 p.m. on July 14.
The Winston Players will perform “She Was Only a Gunslinger’s Daughter… But She Lived With a Bang!” at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 13. This will be followed by a program of folk songs presented by Dale Frazier.
Saturday’s events include breakfast at the fire station beginning at 6 a.m., a baby show at 10 a.m., and parade at 1 p.m. Historian Bill Worley will impersonate Kansas City’s infamous political boss Tom Pendergast at 2 p.m., followed by story telling from Dale Frazier at 3 p.m. Mr. Worley is the author of several books. His appearance in Winston is part of the American Mirror Speakers’ Bureau which is sponsored by the Missouri Humanities Council and funded by the State of Missouri and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
At 4 p.m. the Winston Players will present a drama that could have taken place in Winston in 1877 or 1878. At 5 p.m. the Mic-O-Say dancers will perform followed by bluegrass and folk music performed by Dale Frazier beginning at 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. there will be a program of music and comedy called “Country Gone Crazy.”
The festival is an annual event sponsored by the Winston Historical Society. Revenue from each $10 annual membership helps defray costs. Most of the 70 active members live too far away to attend the festival program, so each $10 membership is important.
Dues and donations may be sent to: The Treasurer, Winston Historical Society, P.O. Box 177, Winston, MO 64689.
Those unable to attend but wanting a cancellation may submit a mail order request if postmarked no later than 30 days after the event. All requests must include a stamped envelope or postcard bearing at least the minimum first class postage. Items submitted for cancellation may not include postage issued after the date of the requested cancellation. Such items will be returned unserviced.
Customers wishing to obtain a cancellation should affix stamps to any envelope or postcard addressed to themselves or others, with a card of postcard thickness inserted for sturdiness. Send your request to: 1881 James Gang Robbery Station, Postmaster, 101 W. 2nd St., Winston, MO 64689-9998.
