1889 Squirrel Cage Jail open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday
If you have relatives or visiting friends unfamiliar with Daviess County and this region, you might consider a trip to the visitors’ center at the 1889 Squirrel Cage Jail located two blocks west of the Gallatin business square.
The visitors’ center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Appointments for group tours may be scheduled at other times by phoning Mary Berry at the jail, 663-4098. The jail is maintained and operated by the Daviess County Historical Society. Dan Lockridge is president.
Already visitors hailing from California, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Texas, Utah, Colorado and Washington have signed the guest book so far this summer. Visitors may choose from a variety of tourism brochures and publications while viewing various informational displays, including details about the life and times of outlaws Frank and Jesse James in Daviess County. The unusual jail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau has announced that they are offering a Friends and Family Survival Kit during this summer. The kit helps residents develop ideas on what to do and see while their guests are in town. The kit is a fanny pack which contains a St. Joseph visitors guide, map and variety of coupons from attractions, restaurants and businesses in St. Joseph.
Anyone interested in obtaining a “survival kit” should call Marcy George at the Convention and Visitors Bureau office in St Joseph, 816-233-6688.
