Crappie anglers are especially fond of the month of May because crappie move into shallow water and are easily caught in most lakes. Some lakes contain so many crappie that anglers often catch fish nearly every cast. In many of these cases, crappie are often too abundant, grow slowly, and rarely reach large sizes.
Such is the case at Pony Express Lake south of Maysville. At Pony Express Lake, crappie are usually easy to catch but are a little on the small side. Because of this, many anglers overlook Pony Express Lake and other similar lakes when planning spring fishing trips.
Even though crappie may be small in these lakes, they provide a lot of action and some outstanding eating.
To take advantage of the overabundant crappie population at Pony Express Lake and to kick off this spring’s crappie fishing, the Missouri Department of Conservation is hosting a crappie fishing event/crappie fry at Pony Express Lake on Thursday, May 10, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come catch crappie and bring them to the boat ramp where MDC employees will clean and cook them for you. Tea, lemonade, bread, and hushpuppies will also be provided.
Department of Conservation employees will also offer fish cleaning and cooking demonstrations and will be available for advice on how to catch crappie. Whether you are an experience or novice crappie angler come join the fun! Crappie should be plentiful and you won’t have to do the cleaning and cooking!
If you have questions about the event or in the case of inclement weather call the Missouri Department of Conservation Office in St. Joseph at 816-271-3100.
