Each year nearly one million children are treated for bicycle-related injuries in U.S. medical facilities. Forty-nine percent of all bicycle-related deaths occur to children age 16 or younger. Locally, a recent survey by Grundy County CHART indicated that bike helmets were the second main safety issue that needed additional resources and attention.
On Saturday, May 19th from 9-11:30 a.m. the Optimist Club of Trenton is sponsoring their seventh annual Bicycle Safety Rally. The rally is free and open to children up to the 8th grade from Trenton and neighboring communities. The Rally will be at the Coca-Cola Sales Center across from Modine in Trenton. Activities will include viewing a bicycle safety video, bike inspections and minor adjustments, proper helmet fitting instruction, and skills activities. Each child to register will have their name entered in a drawing for new bicycle helmets and will receive a bicycle water bottle and a bottle of Barq’s Red Cream Soda. There will be coffee and bagels for the parents. For more information call 359-6210.
