The Daviess County Extension Center again offered “Hatching Chicks in the Classroom” to area schools this year.
The Daviess County Extension Center again offered “Hatching Chicks in the Classroom” to area schools this year. This is one of many 4-H school enrichment programs offered by the University of Missouri.
Schools, teachers, and students enjoyed the embryology project for one week in their classrooms. The pre-set eggs were delivered April 24 to all pre-enrolled area classrooms, which included Pattonsburg R-2, Gallatin R-5, North Daviess R-3, and Tri-County R-7.
Teachers who use the 4-H incubation and embryology program many times find that it better helps children to relate to their schoolwork and real life situations. They find that this topic carries over into all subject areas. A few examples of this are: it inspires the students to want to read more about the subject, to learn more about measuring temperature, and developing a better sense of time. It also can relate to many discussion topics such as basic needs of life, life and death, handicaps, human treatment of animals, etc.
Linda Denton, 4-H Youth Specialist, contacted the area schools in February with the annual embryology project offer. If anyone missed the chance this year and would like to participate next year please contact the Extension Center at (660) 663 –3232.
