At their April 17 regular meeting, the Pattonsburg R-2 Board of Education agreed to set up a special meeting at 6 p.m. on April 23 in which the attorneys for the district will be present to walk through and start a process of litigation.
During the building report, members were told that materials to repair leaks on the dome have been received and plans to repair are under way. Additional baffles in the gym may be needed but there was a noticeable difference at the past school play.
Carlena Leeper and the art department finished the handicap sign project and all handicap requirements have been met.
After returning from executive session, the board offered contracts to Kirk Sears to teach junior high and senior high science, head softball, assistant boys basketball and junior high boys basketball and to Shelly Sears to teach junior and senior high health, PE, ITV, assistant softball, junior high girls basketball and head girls basketball.
In other business at Tuesday’s meeting, members addressing the board were asked to follow customary procedure and hold remarks to three minutes and that a 30 minute period would be provided for individuals to address the board.
A request was granted to Leann Hughes, preschool teacher, to meet with the board in executive session with David Bonds her MSTA representative about her non-renewal for the 2001-2002 school year.
Pam Mooney addressed the board on behalf of several parents concerned with the future of pre-school and on Ms. Hughes behalf. They expressed their deep feelings for the job Ms. Hughes had done and their wish to retain Ms. Hughes. The board allowed other individuals, not on the agenda, to address the board on this issue.
Mrs. John Long presented the board with invitations to sixth grade graduation and also asked questions about the sixth grade teacher and plans if any to bring her back to finish the school year. Ms. Brown, elementary teacher, and Mr. DeShon addressed her concerns.
Mr. DeShon presented the monthly financial report. The transfer of $40,000 from the MOSIPMM to GBT Fund I on March 29 was approved, as was the transfer of $90,000 from the MOSIPMM to GBT Fund I scheduled for April 22.
The signature card documents required from the Guarantee Bank and Trust for check authorization were passed around to members.
Bills were approved.
Mr. DeShon presented to the board a report from the finance committees meeting on April 6. The committee submitted for board approval professional staff short term leaves of absence policies which included sick leave, personal leave, pregnancy and child birth, professional leave, review of FMLA, and additional leave provisions. He also informed members of the board the committee was actively working on health, dental and life insurance programs. The committees proposed professional staff short term leave of absence was adopted as board policy.
Mr. DeShon presented an approval from the North Daviess board a waiver to allow Jodi Roberts to attend school in the Pattonsburg district. The board allowed Jodi Roberts to continue to attend Pattonsburg R-2 High School even though she lives outside district boundaries.
The district was asked to look into a possible policy in the displaying of pictures in the hallway. Superintendent DeShon requested that a committee of teachers, sponsor and coaches be asked to investigate and develop some ideas to be brought to the board for policy development.
Elementary Principal Judy Brown reported that grades three, four and five will begin MAP testing form April 24-May 3; fifth grade field trip to Kansas City Science City is May 3; third and fourth grade field trip is May 4; elementary field day is May 7; preschool trip is May 8; music concert is May 10; sixth grade graduation is May 15.
High School Principal Mr. Wright presented changes in the seven through 12 social studies curriculum to align with Show Me standards. Mrs. Purcell attended the curriculum meetings for the area district schools and stated the change was suggested to improve and better prepare students. Discussion followed and it was suggested that the school look at the current text books being used and give Mr. DeShon information on what we may needed to budget to make this change.
State Business Contest is May 5; Academic Awards Night with desert to follow is May 8; senior tea and senior trip is May 11; graduation practice is May 18; state track is May 18-19; graduation is at 2 p.m. on May 20.
The board went into executive session at 12:17 a.m. and returned to regular session at 12:48 a.m.
