Little did freshman Duke Burge know how important his score would
be for Gallatin’s varsity golf team on Monday in Sedalia.
Gallatin’s #5 golfer, shot a 93 that finished well out of the
running for a medal, but beat the #5 linkster from St. Mary’s by 12
strokes and with that the Bulldogs took yet another Sacred Heart
Tournament title.
Gallatin and St. Mary’s, who happen to be in the same 1A district,
matched 4-man team scores of 326 over 18 holes before Burge’s round
tipped the championship to Gallatin. GHS junior Brice Garnett tied
St. Mary’s Adam Nonheiser for the best individual score, 76, but
Nonheiser pulled out the medalist award on the second hole of
playoff competition.
Junior Jacob Humphrey finished 3rd for Gallatin with a round of 80.
Senior Joey Evans shot an 81 and finished in a 3-way tie for 4th.
Ryan Thompson added an 89 for the Bulldogs, who have won 4 straight
Sacred Heart titles.
St. Pius X finished 3rd in the team competition with a total of
336. A total of 20 teams competed in Monday’s event.
The Bulldogs shot their best team score of the season, 146, in
defeating Maysville and Lathrop by 30 strokes on Tuesday at the
Lakeside Golf Course in Maysville. Garnett took the medalist honor
with a 2-under par 33. Humphrey carded a 36 to finish 2nd in the
individual competition. Thompson tied for 3rd with a 37. Evans and
Burge tied for 5th with identical rounds of 40. Maysville’s Aaron
Gaiser was 3rd with a 37.
Gallatin golfers travel to Trenton on Thursday and will take part
in the highly competitive Cameron Tournament on Saturday, where
they will square off again against 2A defending champ Maryville.
The Bulldogs will also head to Albany on Monday for a 4 p.m. start.
