Funeral services for William Eugene Dice were held April 6, at the Hamilton United Methodist Church. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery, Cameron. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Hamilton Senior Citizen’s Center, the Hamilton United Methodist Church or the WWII Memorial Fund, American Battle Monument Commission.
William Eugene Dice, 79, Hamilton, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Cameron Community Hospital.
Mr. Dice was born in the Summit Community, DeKalb County. He graduated from Cameron High School in 1940 as an honor student in agriculture. He lived in the Hamilton area for the last 50 years.
Mr. Dice enlisted in the Navy on Sept. 24, 1940. He was assigned to the USS West Virginia at Bremerton, Wash. He survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He then served as Chief Boatswain’s Mate on the oil tanker The USS Dixie at Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, South Pacific, Comserforpac. He was later assigned to Treasure Island, Calif. in 1945.
Mr. Dice was a farmer and livestock producer and Standard Oil agent. He also worked for Cameron Mutual Insurance as vice-president for claims, retiring after 24 years in 1986.
On Sept. 12, 1945, he married Ruth Cope in Oakland, Calif. She died in 1998.
Mr. Dice was a member of the Hamilton United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #285, Missouri Charolais Breeders Association, Missouri Farm Bureau, past president of Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, past president of Hamilton Rotary Club, former Hamilton city councilman, former director of Caldwell County Bank. He also served on Rosewood Village board, and was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivor Association. He was a charter member of the Martin Warren Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Mr. Dice was also preceded in death by one sister, Marjorie L. Stanley; and two brothers, Gerald A. and Thomas O.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynda Pendleton, Gallatin; one brother, Wilbur D. Dice; one sister, Ruth E. Hampton three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
