Gallatin FCCLA chapter members win state medals

The Gallatin FCCLA Chapter recently participated in the STAR Events recognition program at the State Leadership Conference of Missouri Family, Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) in Columbia, March 29-31, in the Holiday Inn Select and Expo Center.

Kyle Hefley, Brittney Hixson, Allison Lockridge, Lindsey Robertson, Kiera Story, Katie Ward and Whitney Wright participated in Junior Parliamentary Procedure and received a gold medal and will be advancing to Nationals held in Anaheim, Calif., July 8-12. Erin Croy participated in Illustrated Talk Junior Category and Erin Sweatman participated in Illustrated Talk Senior. Both girls received gold medals and will also be advancing to Nationals.

Approximately 400 young men and women advanced to the state-level program in 13 events: Applied Technology, Chapter Service Project, Chapter Showcase, Entrepreneurship, FCCLA Knowledge, Focus On Children, Food Service, Illustrated Talk, Impromptu Speaking, Interpersonal Communications, Job Interview, Parliamentary Procedure, and Skills For Life.

The Gallatin FCCLA Star Participants were Kendra Kelly, Allison McLaughlin and Haleigh Tague in Focus on Children and received a silver medal. Jamie Burnett, Rochelle Davitt, Nathan Henderson, Kamille Burrell, Kayli Burrell and Roxi Davitt participated in Senior Parliamentary Procedure and received a gold medal. Brook Carder received a gold and was first in the state in impromptu speaking.

The STAR (Student Taking Action with Recognition) Events program of FCCLA is based on the belief that all people can be winners. Competition, evaluation and recognition all stress cooperation as the basis of success. Both youth and adults work together as managers of the events and as evaluators of the participants.

Four Gallatin members received state recognition for their achievement in Power of One. Power of One consists of five different modules of activities that the students is involved in throughout the year. Those students who participated in all five were Roxi Davitt, Allison Lockridge, Kiera Story and Katie Ward.

The Gallatin Chapter was recognized for participating in the Community Service Award Program with their Toys for Tots Project.

Members also participated in and applied for the Families Acting Against Community Traffic Safety (FACTS) Award. The FACTS project was the Docu-Drama that the school participated in earlier in the year. The chapter was the state winner and received $100. Their application has been forwarded to national headquarters for consideration of the National FACTS Award.

The Leadership Conference closed with the installation of the 2000-2001 state officers, Jamie Lunsford was installed as one of the new executive council members. Others present were Samantha Bridgman as a voting delegate and the chapter advisor Kathy Robertson.

Family, Career, Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education. The organization has involved more than nine million youth since its founding in 1945.

FCCLA is unique among student organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only in-school organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.
