Gallatin R-5 juniors Robert Heldenbrand, Scott Wilkinson and Zach Strange have been selected to attend American Legion Boys State at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

The purpose of the camp, held in June, is to educate youth in the duties, privileges, responsibilities, and rights of American citizenship. The educational camps are designed so that the mechanics of government are actually operated by the participating youth.

Participants have their own city, county and state governments. They also elect their own city, county and state officials. They learn the duties of various public offices their functions, limitations and powers. They have their own legislatures where they introduce and debate their own bills.

The students make and enforce ordinances regulating their cities, conduct their own police force and courts of law, and administer justice. Each student has a chance to learn that his/her government is just what the student makes it. Although there is time for recreation, Boys State is not a recreational camp. Participants are selected for qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service.

Scott was sponsored by the Rotary Club, Zack by the Gallatin Lions Club, and Robert by the Gallatin Men’s Club.

Several scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 are offered by area colleges based on attendance at Boys State and Girls State.
