In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 22-28), OATS’ Daviess County Support Committee has selected Clara Macrander of Gallatin as their Volunteer of the Year.
“I like volunteering and calling the people, because I am helping the drivers get people to ride the bus,” said Clara. “After doing the calling you begin to feel close to the people who ride the bus. I enjoy volunteering because I like helping.”
OATS, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit corporation providing specialized transportation for the elderly, disabled and rural residents in 87 of Missouri’s 114 counties, including Franklin. OATS has evolved from its original operation in eight counties in 1971 to the largest such enterprise in the United States.
Clara joins honorees from the other 86 counties in OATS’ service area representing the entire OATS volunteer network of over 1,000. Among other duties, volunteers plan local bus schedules, dispatch rural service, serve as committee members and on the Board of Directors, and raise money toward the cost of each new vehicle.
In 2000, OATS volunteers reported $685,448 worth of volunteer hours. These hours are used to match federal and state funds obtained through contracts and grants with eight Area Agencies on Aging, including the Northwest Area Agency on Aging, and the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department.
