More than 300 students at Covel D. Searcy Elementary participated in Jump Rope for Heart the week of Feb. 5-9 to promote their cardiovascular fitness and to raise money for the American

Heart Association. Fourth grader Michael Kurtz raised the most money with over $200 in contributions.

The event was coordinated by Doug Nichols from Covel D. Searcy Elementary, and its aim was to educate the students on the benefits of regular exercise and to raise money for the America Heart Association’s research and public education programs.

Mr. Nichols said the event was a great success: “This is our third year to participate in Jump Rope for Heart and the students gave the event 100 percent. It’s super when you see students working toward a goal of helping people through the American Heart Association’s research and educational programs. It makes sense to give heart research the number one priority since cardiovascular diseases kill more Americans than all other causes combined. I also think it is

important to teach our youth about volunteerism and giving to people in need.”

February is heart month and Jump Rope for Heart is held annually in Gallatin to encourage children and adults to promote heart health in the community.
