A special Missouri House subcommittee faced with the task of drawing congressional district lines based on 2000 U.S. Census Bureau numbers will hold a series of public hearings in the upcoming weeks to take public testimony on the matter.

The House Special Committee on Redistricting will meet to discuss potential changes needed for the district boundaries of Missouri’s congressional districts. The subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Craig Hosmer (D-Springfield), is charged with drawing in district lines for congressional districts 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Daviess County is in the 6th district.

The redistricting committee must consider population increases and decreases in existing districts when making changes. Congressional districts are required to have similar population sizes.

When population increases in a district, its geographic size may need to be decreased. When population decreases, a district may need to expand in geographic size to take in more people. Based on 2000 census data, the average population size for a congressional district is expected to be approximately 620,000 residents.

Public hearing being held nearest to Daviess County is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, from 5:30-7 p.m at Penn Valley Community College , Campus Center, Room 508.
