Winter sports took the spotlight at Gallatin High School last
Friday night when GHS participants in wrestling, basketball and
cheerleading were honored in front of family and friends.
Coach Barron Gann started the program by recognizing his wrestlers.
Gallatin grapplers finished 4-6 in duals and a season-best 3rd in
the Gallatin Tournament. Honored were freshmen Brendan Conover,
Adam Boyd, George Handley, Rusty Hendricks, Andrew McBroom and
sectional qualifier Tyler Nichols; sophomores Justin Baker, Anthony
Eaton (provisional letter), B. J. Jones and state qualifier Andrew
Parker; juniors Rick Hendricks, sectional qualifier Robert Mazur,
sectional qualifier Blake Parker and sectional qualifier and tri-
captain Austin Story; senior tri-captain Luke Leeper and tri-
captain and state qualifier Randy Eaton.
Also recognized by Gann were wrestlers statisticians and managers
Ashley Eaton, Allison Lockridge, Cori Nichols and Pam Walker.
Special wrestling awards were presented to: Randy Eaton, Most
Valuable Player and Most Pins; Anthony Eaton, Mr. Dedication;
Andrew Parker, Most Improved; Luke Leeper, Sportsmanship; Austin
Story and Blake Parker, Coach’s Award; and Tyler Nichols, Rookie of
the Year. Eaton, Leeper and Pam Walker were also recognized as 4-
year letterwinners.
Sponsors Anita Riley and Christa Sullenger introduced basketball
cheerleaders Katie Heldenbrand, Melissa Mazur, Chasidy Renne, Katie
Sauls, Mackenzie Riley; captain, MVP and 4-year letterwinner Kara
Sullenger; and mascot Melanie Jones.
Coach Rick Linn presented awards to members of the Lady Bulldog 8-5
junior varsity and 20-8 (4-4 GRC) district champion varsity girls
basketball teams and introduced statisticians and managers Jamie
Freeman, Kendra Kelly, Stephanie Phelps, Lindsey Robertson and
video technician Jake Rutherford.
Lady Bulldog team members included: freshmen Samantha Bridgeman,
Lindsey Love, Allison McLaughlin, Keira Story, Katie Ward, Whitney
Wright and Jenny Youtsey; sophomores Amanda Bohannon, Kamille
Burrell, Kayli Burrell, Brook Carder, Roxi Davitt, Jamie Lunsford
and Laura McCann; juniors Kim Clevenger and Erin Sweatman and
seniors Jamie Burnett, Rochelle Davitt and Sharron Freire.
Team awards for girls included: Rochelle Davitt, Rebounding Award
and Most Valuable Player; Kayli Burrell, Defensive Player of the
Year; Brook Carder, Most Improved; Lindsey Love, Rookie of the
Year; Jamie Lunsford, Hustle Award; and Erin Sweatman, Coach’s
Award.
Gallatin’s varsity boys finished 6-2 in the GRC (2nd) and 15-11
overall. The jayvee boys recently finished a 9-5 season. Team
members recognized were: freshmen Duke Burge, Pat Dickinson, Colby
Swanstone, Mike Love, Danny Clevenger, Dustin Teel and Jeremiah
Gibson; sophomores Zach Osgood, Matt Swofford, Brady Feigly, Will
Jarboe and Wilson Tolen; juniors Brice Garnett, Robert Heldenbrand,
Jake Humphrey and Scott Wilkinson; and seniors Jeremy Borges, Joey
Evans, Nathan Henderson; Ben Hubbard and Joe Smith.
Special awards for the boys went to: Robert Heldenbrand, Rebound
Award and Most Valuable Player; Ben Hubbard and Nathan Henderson,
Co-Defensive Player of the Year; Zach Osgood, Most Improved;
Jeremiah Gibson, Rookie of the Year; Brice Garnett, Hustle Award;
and Jake Humphrey, Coach’s Award.
Athletic Director Chris Elbert presented sportsmanship awards to
Erin Sweatman and Jake Humphrey on behalf of the National
Federations of High School Athletics.
Elbert also announced 1999-2000 academic all-conference honorees
who earned at least a 3.66 grade point average while participating
in GRC activities. They were: Shannon Batson, Chanel Burge, Scott
Crose, Silas Fitzmaurice, Courtney Houghton, Julie Macy, Allison
Spidle, Neat Steward, Rebecca Stith, Kelly Story, Jack Taylor, Andy
Weldon, Robert Wood, Catherine Berry, Amanda Boyd, Jamie Burnett,
Rochelle Davitt, Wesley Gay, Nathan Henderson, Ben Hubbard, Luke
