Gallatin R-5 Science Olympiad placed second at district competition held Saturday, March 3, at North Central Missouri College in Trenton for level “C”. The top four schools, out of ten participating, go on to state competition at the University of Missouri in Columbia on Saturday, April 7.
Plattsburg placed first at the competition, Stanberry placed third and Lawson placed fourth. Other schools participating were Northeast Nodaway, Pattonsburg, Princeton, Maysville, North Mercer and Maysville. Gallatin had 13 students in attendance, of a possible team size of 15 allowed. Medals were awarded for first, second and third places, and ribbons for fourth and fifth place.
Gallatin teams placed first in the Water Quality event, with team members Meredith McCann and Stephanie Swanstone. Second place – Cell Biology, Catherine Berry and Roxi Davitt; Chemistry Lab, Catherine Berry and Heather Berry; Qualitative Analysis, Catherine Berry and Jake Rutherford; Bottle Rockets, Andrew McBroom and Brady Feigly; Robot Ramble, Brady Feigly and Jake Rutherford.
Third place – Amphibians and Reptiles, Meredith McCann and Jake Rutherford; Experimental Design – Laura McCann, Chris Baker and Mariah Gibson; Mission Possible, Chris Baker, Ben Weldon and Mariah Gibson; Wright Stuff, Chris Baker and Sara Friesz.
Fourth place – Physics Lab, Roxi Davitt and Jake Rutherford; Science Clue, Meredith McCann and Roxi Davitt; Boomilever, Ben Weldon and Brady Feigly; Cow-A-Bungee, Jake Rutherford and Sara Friesz.
Fifth place – Scrambler, Heather Berry and Chris Baker.
Gallatin placed in the top five positions in 15 of the 21 events with one first-place, five second place, four third-place, four fourth-place, and one fifth-place.
The 13 members of the High School Science Olympiad team were: seniors, Chris Baker, Meredith McCann, Catherine Berry and Stephanie Swanstone. Sophomores were Roxi Davitt, Brady Feigly, Laura McCann, Jake Rutherford and Mariah Gibson; Freshmen were Sara Friesz, Heather Berry, Ben Weldon and Andrew McBroom. The High School Science Olympiad team is coached by Dennis Steigerwalt.
