The elementary heating and air conditioning project is nearly complete with rooms now comfortable, according to a report given during the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education meeting held Feb. 19, 2001.

There has been a request from the public to buy the old radiators, pipes, and broiler from the elementary school. The school will offer sealed bids to sell the remains of the old boiler system as scrap with the bid to include removal from the building.

In other business at the meeting, Superintendent Julie Kirby reported on the state law requiring students to be near their grade level in reading. Students scoring one or two years below level will have a mandatory reading improvement plan developed which can include tutoring before or after school and longer term summer school session.

Extra hours of school will be available to students will take the MAP test this year. After school study groups will be offered twice for each subject.

The financial statement was reported by Pat Heaps. Bills were paid as presented.

Patty Stark was present and demonstrated a hearing test done using the new hearing testing device obtained through a grant from the Missouri Department of Health.

Board member election is April 3. The last day to register to vote is March 7.

Ms Kirby asked the board to write suggestion for building improvements they felt should be made. There was preliminary discussion of possible projects for each building.

Mr. Willhite reported that numerous teachers and he have been attending workshops on teaching strategies. An advisory group has been set up to establish guidelines for fund-raising by school groups.

Mrs. Steinman reported on plans for the elementary basketball tournament scheduled for March 19-24. We will have an eight team bracket. Ms. Kirby clarified that fourth graders will be on the teams this year and the grade policy will stay in effect for elementary basketball players.

District teachers will attend curriculum camp this summer.

The board went into closed session, and upon returning offered the position as high school principal to Todd Willhite for the 2001-02 school year.

The next regular meeting was set for Monday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Coffey.
