Mercer claimed both titles Saturday night in the championship games
of the HDC Tournament held at Pattonsburg. One victory came easy.
The other was in doubt until the final seconds.
Mercer’s state-ranked boys blew away Tri-County, 67-30, to win
their share of the championship hardware. The Cardinals never
trailed on the way to their 23rd win of the season. Tyson Stark and
Eric Willis scored 24 and 19 points, respectively for the Cards.
Clay Fewins topped Tri-County with 10.
Mercer’s girls needed a pair of free throws from Hannah Stark to
slam the door on Grundy County. Stark popped in a pair of foul
shots with 30 seconds to give the Lady Cards a 45-42 advantage, but
the Lady Panthers weren’t done. Bridgette Berry, playing with a
heavily taped broken finger on her non-shooting hand, launched a 3-
point shot that hit short on the front of the rim. The Lady
Panthers pounced on the rebound but could not reload for a final
long range attempt that would have sent the game into overtime.
Berry led Grundy with 17 points despite her injury. Lesli Wyatt led
Mercer with 17.
North Daviess knocked down 28 of 33 free throws to forestall an
upset bid by Pattonsburg in the girls 3rd place game. The Lady
Knights, led by sophomore Darcie Iddings with 27 points, clipped
the Lady Panthers, 54-45, after Pattonsburg had chipped a double
digit deficit down to a pair of points in the 2nd half.
A buzzer-beating, 15-foot jumper by Jacob Wilson lifted Gilman
City’s boys to a 59-58 upset of Grundy County in the boys 3rd place
contest. The game featured back-and-forth lead changes until Grundy
County retook the lead with 18 seconds left when Opie Peterson hit
a chip shot set up by a tipped ball into Grundy’s end of the court.
Wilson’s winning shot came as he pulled up off the dribble at the
right wing. Gilman City came in as the #4 seed and Grundy County
was the #2 ranked team. Luke Crumps’ 16 points led Gilman City.
Peterson notched 20 points and Tim Marsh added 18 for the Panthers.
