A Prescribed Burn Workshop is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Daviess County Library in Gallatin. The workshop is sponsored by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Missouri Department of Conservation.
Topics to be covered will include: benefits/timing of prescribed burns, planning a prescribed burn; how to conduct a prescribed burn safely; and an equipment demonstration.
Sponsors will also show interested persons how to get the help and burn equipment they need to do their own prescribed burns, plus how to receive additional training. A demonstration burn at the field is tentatively planned after the meeting. Those wishing to attend should call the Daviess Co. NRCS/SWCD office at 660-663-3703 ext. 3.
Prescribed burning is an effective and cost-efficient way to maintain CRP grasslands. Burning every three to five years stimulates a stand of grass and removes excessive mulch accumulations. Removal of accumulated mulch at ground level by burning benefits wildlife in several ways. Prescribed burning, when properly timed, helps to bring back legumes and encourages wildflowers.
