Magician David Sandy, formerly of Kidder and now living in St. Joseph, mixed up a batch of magical entertainment for the United States presidential inaugural held Jan. 18 in Washington, D.C. Sandy is the grandson of Roberta Sandy of Lake Viking.

In appreciation for making the special event so memorable, Mr. Sandy received a letter of thanks from Cynthia Grubb, entertainment director for the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

The letter read in part:

“You certainly held our guests spellbound with your endearing personality and unique style of magical entertainment! Many members of our committee who witnessed your superb magic and unsurpassed organizational skills are still talking about it. Your performance was simply fantastic and just perfect for this historic event!”

Because Mr. Sandy associates with many of the world’s top performers, he was asked to assemble a team of 20 professional magicians to entertain the more than 5,000 attendees of the three inaugural banquets held at the Washington Union Station, National Building Museum, and the Washington Hilton and Towers Hotel.

“It was quite a thrill and challenge for me to put this all together,” Mr. Sandy said.

He worked night and day in order to secure performer contracts, arrange transportation, and make sure everyone passed security clearance. He had no idea how complex it would be, and said it really took a little magic of his own to get it pulled together in such a short time.

President Bush and the vice president, along with other government officials, attended each of the three functions during the course of the evening. Sandy explained that it was the first time magic had been used as a dominant form of entertainment at the banquet.

Mr. Sandy, who’s been performing magic for more than 30 years throughout the heart of America and at prestigious venues including Las Vegas and at Hollywood’s world-famous Magic Castle, currently serves as an executive board member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians members worldwide. He will be installed as International President of the professional association in two years.

Over the last several years, he has been honored with numerous awards including the titles of “Close-Up Magician of the Year” and “State Magician of the Year” by the Kansas City chapter of the organization. He will return to Hollywood, Calif., in April for another week-long engagement at the Magic Castle.

Mr. Sandy has performed numerous times locally, such as last year at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.
